David Willis goes independent
Yesterday, David Willis (Roomies!, It’s Walky!, Shortpacked!), one of the web’s best cartoonists, teamed up with five other cartoonists to form their own comics label, Blank Label Comics. This means that they will be leaving KeenSpot and going independent.
While I haven’t really read the other strips associated with BLC, I have been reading David Willis’ strips since 2001, and I can authoritatively state that he is definitely one of the best cartoonists on the web. I wish him much success in his latest endeavour, and am looking forward to Shortpacked! in color — YAY!
When he ended It’s Walky, I experienced the same sense of loss I felt when Bill Watterson retired and ended Calvin and Hobbes — with the exception that I knew there was more to come from David Willis. Shortpacked! has definitely lived up to my expectations and is a worthy successor to It’s Walky!. Now he’s going independent… this can only mean bigger and better, such as when Watterson won the right to format his sunday strips as he pleased.
David Willis is absolutely in the same class of cartoonist as Bill Watterson. His artwork is excellent (greatly improved from when he first started Roomies!), and his writing and humor is dead-on perfect. And for all you other Gen-Xers who pine for our childhood from back in the 80s, Shortpacked! definitely caters to us. So… if you haven’t already read his strip, what are you waiting for?!??!!
