Repetitious humor
Upon reading my daily comics this morning, I noticed something a bit… off. Two of the comics I read used the same gag today — even down to nearly the same wording. Obviously Bill Amend and Darby Conley have either been talking to each other or they got this gag from the same source. Whatever the case may be, I certainly hope that plagiarism isn’t involved here.

Well, I was checking my referrer logs a few minutes ago, when I found a google search for april+1+2005+comic+strips+darby+conley+bill+amend. Naturally, I followed the link, and found another blog in which someone also noted this “coincidence.” Turns out, Foxtrot and Get Fuzzy weren’t the only ones to use this gag — Pearls Before Swine also did it.

Well, I suppose had I checked Bill Amend’s news page, I would’ve seen this paragraph:

From the WTF department…
Nothing like confusing the heck out a few million newspaper comics readers to get the ol e-mail flowing. As most of you who wrote me guessed, the April 1st near-identical FoxTrot, Get Fuzzy and Pearls Before Swine strips were done as an April Fools joke. This is the sort of thing that happens when cartoonists get too little sleep and then talk on the phone. If you thought it was funny, Im happy to accept a third of the credit. If you thought it was annoying, well, blame Pastis, it was his idea.
